About

Kaili has been painting professionally for over 40 years. Since arriving in Exeter in 1988, she has exhibited her artwork extensively throughout Devon and the South West of England. In addition, she has taught Chinese brush painting at community learning centres, adult education colleges, and residential colleges across the UK.

Kaili's passion is to bring Chinese art to the West and introduce people to this ancient artistic tradition. The paintings exhibited here reflect her love of nature and form part of a recent body of work inspired by her art trips to China and her travels throughout the UK, particularly the South West.

The geography of China differs greatly from that of England and has helped shape the distinctive style of traditional Chinese landscape painting. This style does not naturally lend itself to depicting English scenery. Kaili views the English countryside as flatter and more condensed, requiring a different perspective and artistic approach.

Kaili is one of the few Chinese artists to have attempted to paint English landscapes in the traditional Chinese style. The works displayed here are the result of extensive study, reflection, and experimentation. They represent a stage in her ongoing journey to portray the English landscape in a new and distinctive way, a path she will continue to explore in the years ahead.
